Karl Eric Leitzel was born in 1957, and has lived most of his life in central Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Linda, live in a house they designed and helped build at the foot of a mountain in Centre County, Pennsylvania. He has been painting since his teen years. His wide range of subject matter includes landscapes, wildlife and domestic animals, portraits, and people in their daily lives. A common element is often the use of vivid lighting, with work executed in either oils or acrylics. Karl’s style varies from classical realism to impressionism to bold texture and sweeping strokes. Landscapes are often painted en plein air.
The next few years brought several new show and gallery opportunities, including two awards, a number of organization commissions, and the successful launching of Landscape Artists International, an online international cooperative.
In 2008, Karl became the first Artist in Residence at the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair, which he continues to do every August. Karl’s goal is to capture in fine art the many aspects of this unique and historic county fair, which includes one of the few tent cities in the country, now numbering more than 950 tents. Beginning in 2010, the Fair has released an annual collector’s poster featuring one of Karl’s images.
In 2009, Karl was awarded a commission by Penn State to create a large painting, “Change of Classes”, that now hangs in the main lobby of the prestigious Nittany Lion Inn.
Karl is a member and past president of the Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania, whose members work with the Centre County Farmland Trust and the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania to promote the preservation of farmland. He is also a member of Oil Painters of America, International Plein Air Painters, and the Portrait Society of America.
Karl is now the managing partner and a Resident Artist at the Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center in Millheim, Pennsylvania, where most of his available work is generally located. The Green Drake opened in 2011 and provides art classes and workshops for the community, music performances, poetry readings, and artist studio spaces in addition to the gallery. Karl, who is also a musician and songwriter, teaches guitar lessons as well as weekly art classes at the Green Drake.
In 2013, Karl was a participant and co-host in Far and Near Horizons World Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists exhibition at New Century Artists Gallery in Manhattan, NYC, New York as well as the Green Drake Gallery.
Karl writes a monthly art column, “Ruminations of an Obsessive Artist”, for the Valley Newspaper, published in Yeagertown, Pa. and is otherwise an active proponent for all of the arts in our culture.
